Eighteen months ago, Darren Rayner's video agency was at about $1 million in revenue. Now it's at $2.5 million.

Darren got there by giving his best ideas away on LinkedIn, putting out a free report for his ideal clients, and booking a pile of 15-minute calls with the people who hire video agencies. Those calls have converted something like $600,000 to $700,000 in the last 12 months, and he hasn't spent a cent on ads for them. He charges clients for discovery before he pitches, which I don't see many video agencies doing.

Darren runs Magnafire, a Vancouver creative studio that makes social-first video and photo for outdoor and sport brands like Red Bull, Meta, lululemon, Arc'teryx and Brooks Running. Full transparency, he's a client of ours. In this episode we get into how paid discovery works, how he lands big brands, why audiences are losing trust in AI-generated content, and what he'd tell every brand to do for social in 2027.

Before the interview, I answer a fan mail question from Jonathan Holborn: how do you decide when Viktor can do the job and when a tool is worth paying for?

In this episode:

  • The journalist framework: report what's working, add your take, hand over the playbook

  • From $1M to $2.5M in about 18 months, and what Darren thinks drove it
  • Why entirely AI-generated content costs brands trust, and where Darren does use AI
  • The content pyramid: one hero film, eight shoulder assets, and why the shoulder assets reached about 20 times more people
  • The one social strategy for 2027: world-building and recurring formats
  • Value per second, and what Red Bull and That Pedal Show teach about building an audience first
  • Fan mail: how I decide when Viktor can do the job and when a tool is worth paying for
